Discovering Kent

Since moving to this county, I have been exploring both the obvious and overlooked parts of Kent. Its buildings, landscapes, history and communities have drawn me in. I read, walk, visit and research, trying to understand the county beyond its surface.

  • Tonbridge

    Tonbridge

I have heard about Tonbridge many times that it is charming, but above all, it is expensive to live in, because house prices are at the forefront in the country. Although it is only half an hour from Maidstone to Tonbridge, it has never been “on my way”. Until one day, my dentist sent me…

    Pilgrim Way in Kent

Many people ask me about trekking in England, does it exist because there are no mountains here, there are no beautiful views and the weather is stereotypical English. I agree with the weather,  and certainly you should always have something rainproof on the road, but there are plenty of beautiful views in England. You don’t…

Dancing with the deers in Knole

In 1456, the Archbishop of Canterbury bought a huge estate in southern Kent. He rebuilt the house in the Tudor style at the time, but made it look more like an Oxford University Hall than a residential building. Like this famous university, the manor has two courtyards. The entrance gate leads to the first courtyard…

Kentish Man or Man of Kent

I suspect that by living in Kent, visiting this county, or reading about it, you have come across two terms for local people: Man of Kent or Kentish Man. Where did it come from and is there a difference between these names? Apparently, this division has its origins as early as 515, but the…

  • EAT AND MESS

    EAT AND MESS

Together with my teenage daughter, we love to discover new cafes, tea rooms that either delight us or criticize them. And just yesterday during a visit to the orthopedist in Sevenoaks we went to lunch in a tiny, independent cafe called Eat and Mess. We liked the interior very much, it was tastefully decorated and…

    Gurudwara, Sikh Temple in Gravesend

Great Britain is a country of multicultural community, people from various parts of the world have been emigrating here for hundreds of years and, many of them, have created here their enclaves, the little substitutes for their countries and cultures. For these people living far away from their families and friends religion became very important…

    Pocahontas in Gravesend

Do you remember the famous Disney tale of the Indian princess Pocahontas? In brief, I will tell you: A pretty Indian woman meets English dreamer John Smith and tells him about her world. Of course, they fall in love, which will lead to war between Indians and English. Smith will be sentenced to death, but…

  • Castle in Rochester

    Castle in Rochester

In the south-east of England, in the town of Rochester an amazing castle with a high tower was built in Norman times, in a strategic place on the crossing of the River Medway, way from Europe to London. Walls of the castle were 3-5 meters thick.  Only ruins have survived to the present times, but…

    Cathedral in Rochester

I would like to tell you today about a beautiful Christian temple that has existed in Kent since 604. The beginnings of the cathedral are closely related to the beginnings of Christianity in England. The first builder was Bishop Justus, an Italian who came here at the request of Pope Gregory the Great, in a…
